A trial lawyer for more than four decades, Pat’s practice focuses on the defense of hospitals, health care providers and nursing homes, and mediation services. He has tried many medical malpractice cases to jury verdict and defended numerous personal injury cases over the course of his legal career. He was named Lexington’s 2015 Medical Malpractice Defense “Lawyer of the Year” and 2016 Personal Injury Defense “Lawyer of the Year” by U.S. News−and the Best Lawyers in America®.

Applying the wealth of trial and practical experience he’s acquired over the course of his legal career, Pat is an experienced mediator. As a court-approved mediator, Pat has mediated hundreds of cases involving personal injury, complex torts, medical malpractice and nursing home claims, as well as contracts and other business disputes.

Pat is a Fellow and Kentucky State Chair of The American College of Trial Lawyers. He served as Regional Director of the Defense Research Institute, serving the region that includes Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi. He has been President of the Kentucky Defense Counsel and the State Representative of DRI. Pat has also been a member of the American Association for Justice, the Kentucky Justice Association, the Defense Research Institute and the Kentucky Defense Counsel for more than 30 years.

    Successfully defended orthopedic trauma surgeon following death of patient from an infected wound.

    Successfully defended interventional radiologist at trial following the death of his patient from a pericardial effusion after a soft tissue biopsy.

    Successfully defended an internist at trial from an allegation of failure to warn about the effects of a prolonged erection.

    Successfully defended an internist at trial following the death of his patient following an alleged failure to treat a peritonsillar abscess.

    Successfully defended a general surgeon following the death of his patient from intra-abdominal sepsis.

  • The Fayette County Bar Association honored Pat with the 2020 Henry T. Duncan Award, created in 1960 to honor a member of the association who had made an outstanding contribution to the community. The award is presented to an attorney whose integrity, leadership, and professional conduct serves to exemplify the high ethical and professional standards that benefit the community. Pat consistently gives back, including mentoring young lawyers and leading the revitalization of the Central Kentucky American Inn of Court, and through the Kentucky Access to Justice Commission. He is well-respected by both plaintiff and civil defense attorneys all across the state, who regularly engage him to serve as a mediator.
