BACKGROUND: Gardner's family has long been associated with the practice of law in Lexington, starting in the early 1800s. He was raised in Lexington and educated in the Lexington public and private schools. He received two degrees from the University of Kentucky: a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and his Juris Doctor. Gardner served as a special agent in military intelligence and then returned to Lexington to practice law. He was one of the founders of the firm in 1957. He has served the community as City Prosecutor and Juvenile Judge and has been associated with many civic groups and charitable fund-raising efforts, as well as serving as a member of the Board of Directors of local banks. He has been particularly active in church and has been a member of the Lexington Ministerial Association. He has served the Kentucky Bar Association in many capacities including Chair of the Inquiry Commission, which is the disciplinary arm of the Kentucky Bar Association, and is appointed by the Chief Justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court. In 1991, he was honored with the Outstanding Kentucky Lawyer Award which is bestowed annually by the Kentucky Bar Association and the Henry T. Duncan Memorial Award in 1995 by the Fayette County Bar Association for distinguished personal and professional conduct and community service. Throughout the years, Gardner has always impressed the younger members of the firm with the necessity of serving the firm's clients in a responsible, ethical and efficient manner and the importance of serving the bench and bar. In addition to his practice, he serves the firm as General Counsel.
